Botox® is the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatment — and with good reason. There were over 4.4 million procedures performed in 2020, a 459% increase since 2000.

Why is Botox so popular? It’s a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment completed in as little as 20 minutes, helping you to look and feel younger, and it works! While Botox is one of the most well-known treatments, there are a lot of myths and misinformation out there that are actually incorrect. The expert Aesthetic Injectors at Red Mountain Weight Loss® debunk six myths so that you can decide if Botox is right for you.

MYTH: Botox Should ONLY Be Used for Pre-Existing Wrinkles

There are two types of lines found on the face. Dynamic lines are the visible creases that form during facial expressions like laughing, smiling, or squinting. Static lines are always present and etched in the skin over time.

While Botox is excellent for targeting dynamic lines and softening static ones, it is a great tool for preventing wrinkles from ever forming. Starting Botox in your 20s or 30s can help you age better and delay the appearance of wrinkles.

MYTH: Botox Is Toxic

The rumor that Botox can be toxic simply isn’t true. Botox has been proven to be relatively safe after it was medically approved in 1989 to treat frown lines. Many people think you are injected with clostridium botulinum, a type of bacteria that causes food poisoning. In fact, you are only receiving the purified protein that is derived from this bacteria. You are not receiving the actual bacteria, so there is no risk of getting sick with Botox treatments.

MYTH: Botox Gives You a “Frozen” Look

A common misconception about Botox is that the results will give you a “frozen” look. When administered correctly, Botox should in no way inhibit your facial expressions. While the injected muscle cannot contract, the treated wrinkles relax and soften — not freeze. Our experienced Aesthetic Injectors use Botox to create a more “refreshed” and natural appearance so that no one can tell you had anything done.

MYTH: Botox Is Only for Women

Absolutely NOT! Men also want to look refreshed and have been getting Botox treatments for a while now. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox is the most popular cosmetic procedure requested by men, with a 182% increase from 2000 to 2020.

MYTH: Botox Is Painful

A fear of needles shouldn’t hold you back. Many patients are surprised by what little discomfort there actually is. Botox needles are very fine and inject small amounts of the product into the face. Ice can be applied before and after treatment if needed.

MYTH: The Results Are Immediate

The results of Botox are not immediate but gradually appear over the days following your treatment. You can expect to see changes a few days after your appointment, with the maximum results revealed in about two weeks. Botox’s natural results are worth the wait and generally last two to four months.

Allergan, the makers of Botox® and Juvéderm®, has recognized Red Mountain as a top-ranked practice. This means you can trust our expertise for your injectable treatments and always ensure you get an authentic product.
