The majority of Army body composition program calculator pages online are outdated. They still display the old circumference-based tape test formula from AR 600-9, the one that measured neck and waist for men and added the hip for women. That formula was officially replaced by Army Directive 2026-13, signed July 1, 2026, and made effective July 7, 2026.
This matters more than a simple software update. A Soldier who self-assesses with an outdated calculator before an official weigh-in can walk in with false confidence and face a career-damaging surprise on assessment day.
The new standard is refreshingly simple to state: the Army now uses a single metric, the Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR), with a universal passing threshold of less than 0.55.

The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP), formerly the Army Weight Control Program, has existed since 2002, with major revisions in 2016 and 2023. Those earlier updates adjusted thresholds. The July 2026 directive replaced the entire measurement methodology.
What was rescinded is significant. All previous height-and-weight tables, the circumference-based tape test, and all supplemental assessment methods (including DEXA, InBody 770, and Bod Pod) are no longer authorized for ABCP determinations.
The change follows a December 2025 DoD-wide memo. The Army was the last branch to adopt the WHtR standard. Notably, the Marine Corps set a stricter threshold of 0.52.
The directive applies to all Soldiers: Regular Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, USMA cadets, and Senior ROTC cadets. Every Soldier must have a WHtR recorded in the Army Training Information System (ATIS) by the end of September 2026, within 90 days of publication.
One important protection: no Soldier will be separated solely for failing the WHtR standard during the Army’s initial 180-day evaluation period, while HQDA assesses the policy’s real-world impact.
The New Standard Explained: How to Calculate Your WHtR
WHtR is straightforward: waist circumference divided by height, with both measured in the same unit. Inches or centimeters both work, as long as both numbers use the same unit.
The threshold is precise. A WHtR of less than 0.55 passes. A result of 0.550 or higher triggers ABCP enrollment. The result is truncated to three decimal places, not rounded. A recorded 0.549 passes; 0.550 does not.
The waist is measured at the navel (umbilicus), not at the narrowest point. This is a single-site measurement, a deliberate simplification from the multi-site tape test.

- A Soldier 70 inches tall with a 37-inch waist: 37 ÷ 70 = 0.528. Passing.
- A Soldier 66 inches tall with a 37-inch waist: 37 ÷ 66 = 0.560. Failing.
Any Soldier whose initial reading fails must receive a same-day confirmation measurement from a different testing team before commanders can take any action. Assessments occur twice per calendar year, and commanders may direct an additional assessment at any time if they believe a Soldier does not meet the standard.
The directive also rescinded the requirement to designate an NCO to administer the ABCP. Commanders are now directly responsible for oversight and execution.

The circumference-based tape test carried an error margin of roughly 3 to 4 percent compared to DEXA’s 1 to 2 percent, making it a less accurate proxy for true body fat. The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) validated the single-site abdominal measurement by comparing tape test methods against DEXA scans across a diverse Soldier population. A peer-reviewed study in the International Journal of Obesity, analyzing a cohort of 20,896 basic training recruits, found waist circumference was the single circumference contributing most to the prediction of body fat in males.
The new standard has its own limitation worth acknowledging: WHtR does not distinguish fat mass from muscle mass. A Soldier with a naturally wider torso from muscle development could theoretically be flagged despite low body fat. That is a nuance no calculator can resolve, but a clinical assessment can.

Continued failure after 6 months, or 2 consecutive months of unsatisfactory progress, can trigger a bar to continued service or separation proceedings under AR 635-200 Chapter 18.
One official exemption pathway exists. Under Army Directive 2025-17, Soldiers who score 465 or higher on the Army Fitness Test (AFT), with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are considered compliant with body fat standards regardless of WHtR. This is policy, not a workaround. The 180-day protection window offers temporary relief during implementation, but it is time-limited and does not eliminate the need to address the underlying issue.
What a Calculator Cannot Tell You

A calculator cannot reveal visceral fat mass versus subcutaneous fat mass, lean muscle mass by body segment, resting metabolic rate, bone density, insulin resistance, hormonal contributors to fat storage (such as low testosterone, cortisol dysregulation, or thyroid dysfunction), or metabolic age.
There is an irony here. By eliminating supplemental clinical assessments from the official process, the Army has made WHtR the sole compliance metric. That makes independent clinical assessment more valuable, not less, for Soldiers who want to understand and correct their actual physiology.
The Clinical Picture: Understanding What Is Actually Driving Your WHtR
Body composition is a downstream outcome. The number on a calculator reflects upstream metabolic and hormonal conditions that, left unaddressed, make sustainable change difficult regardless of effort.
