The first recorded use of Microneedling was in 1905 by German dermatologist Ernst Kromayer, and since then, this century-old procedure has gained popularity with individuals of all ages and skin types.

To understand the importance of Microneedling, we must first look at the importance of collagen. Collagen is derived from the Greek word “kolla”, meaning “glue”. It’s an appropriate and significant protein that literally holds the body together, and is a key factor in keeping your skin firm and younger-looking over time. Unfortunately, after the age of 25, collagen production starts to decline, and your skin’s appearance starts to change. How can you maintain and build collagen? Microneedling.

According to a medical study conducted in 2008, skin treated with Microneedling produced up to 400% increase in collagen six months after completing treatment! Read on to discover what Microneedling is and how your skin can benefit from this procedure.

What is Microneedling?

A Microneedling treatment, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is carried out using a device called a MicroPen that create micro-injuries in the skin to increase cellular turnover.  This process helps boost the skin’s production of elastin and collagen.  The result is smoother, firmer and younger-looking skin!

What is PRP Microneedling?

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is carried out by drawing a vial of the patient’s blood.  The blood spins in a centrifuge to reveal the clear fluid of PRP and is directly applied to the skin during the Microneedling treatment.  The PRP acts like a super-charged growth serum and further enhances your results.

What does Microneedling treat?

Microneedling can be used to correct skin issues including acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, melasma and more.  It is a great routine treatment to keep skin looking healthy and ageless!

Is Microneedling safe?

Microneedling is a very safe, non-invasive treatment that generates results.  There is a short downtime with a Microneedling treatment and therefore, oftentimes patients can resume their normal activities the very next day.

How is the Microneedling treatment carried out in office?

When patients arrive for their appointment, the Medical Aesthetician does a deep cleaning on the face and neck.  Then, either a Dermaplane or Microdermabrasion is completed to pre-exfoliate the skin and remove any peach fuzz.  Afterwards, a topical numbing cream is applied and left on the skin for approximately 20 minutes.  Once removed, the Microneedling treatment will be performed on the face and neck.  After your treatment is finished, the Medical Aesthetician will apply any additional serums to the skin like our RM Collagen Boost Serum and an SPF.

A variation of the Microneedling treatment would be if the patient is adding PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), in which during the time the patient is numbing, a vial of their blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to reveal the PRP.  The PRP is then applied to the skin during the Microneedling treatment and immediately after.

What do you feel like after a Microneedling treatment?

The day of your treatment, it is very common for the skin be red, feel tight and warm – almost like a sunburn.  The skin heals incredibly fast and usually by the next day, your skin may be slightly pink, but you’re able to wear makeup if necessary.  Over the course of 5-7 days after your treatment, you may start to peel or “shed” old skin. This process reveals healthier-looking skin!

How many treatments are needed and how much time between treatments?

This can vary per patient and depends greatly on what we are targeting.  For patients that are wanting to work on specific conditions, you would want to do a series of three to six treatments about every 2-4 weeks.  As a routine or maintenance treatment, you would want to do one every 6-8 weeks.

Who is the ideal candidate for Microneedling procedures?

An ideal candidate would be someone who has their acne under control, does not have Rosacea or exhibits a lot of vascularity in their skin and someone who is not on prescription blood thinners.  This procedure is safe for all skin types.  Specific pre and post instructions will be reviewed during the patient consultation where a custom treatment plan will be created for you.
