You’ve probably heard the buzz about GLP-1 medications if you’ve explored weight loss options. These innovative tools can help you lose weight and feel healthier, but it’s important to understand how GLP-1 dosage for weight loss are determined to maximize their effectiveness.

GLP-1 Dosage for Weight Loss: A Brief Overview

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone that your body produces naturally. It plays a crucial role in regulating your appetite and blood sugar levels. GLP-1 meds (like semaglutide) mimic this hormone to help you lose weight and manage other health aspects like blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

The recommended GLP-1 dosage for weight loss typically starts low to allow your body to adjust and then gradually increases over time. This ensures that you get the maximum benefits while minimizing any side effects.

Finding the correct dose for GLP-1 weight loss is key to achieving your desired results. Here’s what you can expect in terms of GLP-1 dosage for weight loss:

  1. Starting Dose: The initial dose is often 0.25 mg once weekly for the first four weeks. This gentle introduction helps your system get used to the medication without overwhelming it.
  2. Increase Gradually: Your doctor usually increases your dose after the first month. The dose might increase to 0.5 mg per week for the next four weeks.
  3. Maintenance Dose: Once the initial adjustment phase is over, the dosage is usually further increased to reach the maintenance dose, which could be around 1.0 mg per week. This is the dose that many people will stay on to maintain their weight loss and manage their body weight.
  4. Higher Doses if Needed: Everyone’s body is different, so you may need a higher dose if you aren’t seeing results. However, you should only do this under the strict guidance of your doctor. In some cases, doses of semaglutide can go up to 2.4 mg per week.

By the way, it’s very important that you follow your prescribed dosing schedule. Your medication follows a national titration schedule, so missing doses can disrupt the effectiveness of the treatment and lead to unwanted side effects. Set a calendar reminder or alarm on your phone so you always take your medication on time.

Semaglutide Dosing Schedule for Weight Loss

Phase Duration Dosage (mg)
Initial Phase 4 weeks 0.25 mg/week
Adjustment Phase Next 4 weeks 0.5 mg/week
Maintenance Phase After 8 weeks 1.0 mg/week
Higher Dose (if needed) As prescribed Up to 2.4 mg/week

How to Administer Your GLP-1 Medication

GLP-1 medications are usually self-administered as injections. Don’t worry; it’s easier than you might think! Our Clinical Team will guide you through the process, ensuring you feel confident and comfortable with each injection.

Gather Your Supplies

  • Ensure you have everything you need: the GLP-1 medication, syringe and needle, alcohol swabs, and a disposable plastic container for safely throwing out the used needles.

Note: Your dosage will change over time, so check the dosage prescribed on your medication label.

Prepare the Injection Site

There are a few more steps you must complete before you administer the injection:

  1. Remove the foil seal on the vial and wipe with an alcohol swab.
  2. Remove the orange cap from the needle.
  3. Hold the syringe like you hold a pen and draw the plunger, filling it with air up to the correct number of units.
  4. Insert the needle through the rubber stopper on the vial and push the air into the medication.
  5. Together, turn the vial and syringe upside down. Make sure the entire needle is in the medication.
  6. Pull the plunger down past the correct number of units. Then, push up to the prescribed dosage to remove all air bubbles.
  7. Pull the entire syringe out of the vial once you have the correct number of units.

Administer the Injection

  1. Clean the area with an alcohol wipe and let it dry.
  2. Pinch a fatty area of skin in the injection site to create a firm surface.
  3. Insert the entire needle into the pinched fatty area of the skin at an angle.
  4. Push the plunger down all the way with constant pressure until the entire dose has been injected.
  5. Remove the needle from the injection site and don’t worry if there are any drops of medication left over. Throw it away in a plastic container with a lid (e.g. empty water bottle).
  6. Use a cotton ball to clean any blood droplets and massage the area.
  7. Wash hands and dispose of all supplies. Ensure the plastic container has a secure lid to avoid the needle falling out.

Monitor for Side Effects

Side effects may occur with any medication. After you administer the GLP-1, watch for common side effects like nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. These are usually mild and may improve within a few days. If you find them intolerable, we offer a GLP Essentials Kit to target the most common concerns that coincide with GLP medications. It includes helpful supplements like:

  • BPC-157 Peptide: This is your gut’s new BFF. The BPC-157 Peptide helps improve digestive health and reduce GI side effects.
  • CLA: CLA helps boost muscle growth and enhance exercise performance, helping you get even more mileage out of your workouts.
  • Collagen MSB: Collagen MSB improves muscle mass, skin quality, and bone health.

Adjusting Your GLP-1 Dosage

Everyone is different, and so should your GLP-1 medication. Here’s what you need to know about GLP-1 dosages:

  • Start Small: You will begin with a low dose and gradually increase it over time. This will help minimize any potential side effects and allow your body time to adjust to the medication.
  • Work with Your Doctor: GLP-1 dosing isn’t something you should DIY. Here at Red Mountain, our Clinical Team will individualize a plan based on your health history, weight loss goals, and lifestyle to ensure your success. You should start to see results within the first few weeks of taking the GLP-1 drugs. If not, we’ll modify your meds to get you back on track.

Remember: Your GLP-1 med follows a national titration schedule to minimize side effects. This means your dose will start small and increase monthly until the maximum maintenance dose is reached.
